Bringing Home Baby: How to Decorate a Nursery

Before you pop the bubbly to celebrate a wall well done, make sure you haven’t left any bubbles in your wall decal. That would be so sad after all your hard work.

If you have a squeegee in your shower for your post-shower wipe downs, take that over to the bedroom and give the surfaces of the decal a light swipe (much like step one).

Go nice and easy so you don’t move your carefully-placed decal or tear it. Then, you can be sure all surfaces are sticking, the bubbles have floated away, and you have a perfectly positioned masterpiece.

Table of Contents

1. Choose a Theme

While this isn’t a must, having a theme for your nursery design will help guide your decisions and point you in the right direction. It will also help create a more cohesive design.

You can choose from classic themes like nautical, the great outdoors, and under the sea or more modern ones like black and white, stripes, or vintage.

Look to your own personal preferences for inspiration. Choose colours and patterns that best represent your style and family.

Bring colour and design elements from other rooms in the house into the baby’s room to create a natural flow.

2. Consider Basic Baby Needs

When you decorate a nursery you want it to be adorable, warm, and welcoming. But it also needs to be functional.

Every nursery design should include some basic items including a crib (or somewhere for your baby to sleep), a changing table, a dresser, and a comfortable chair for rocking and nursing.

Once you have these items in place, you can start accessorising with nursery decorations.

Consider the size of the nursery and the furniture you buy. Make a template that includes the room’s dimensions as well as the individual pieces.

Move them around on the paper to create the most functional and practical layout.

Decide whether you want a standard crib or one that converts into a toddler bed when the time is right. (Be sure to account for this change in dimensions and size.)

3. Add Unique Wall Art

Nursery decorations don’t need to be elaborate or expensive. Sometimes, the simplest designs make the biggest impact. Plus, you don’t want to overwhelm your little one.

Wall decals are the perfect addition to any nursery design.

Available in a variety of themes, wall stickers are easy to apply and remove without damaging the paint or wallcoverings.

These wall decorations are the perfect blend of simplicity and whimsy. From stars and polka dots to flowers and rainbows, you can decorate a small area of the nursery or an entire wall.

4. Select a Neutral Colour Scheme

While gender reveal parties are all the rage these days, some expectant parents prefer a gender-neutral nursery theme.

If this describes you, or you’re undecided about decor, opt for a neutral, universal colour scheme that will please any palette.

Some popular choices are greys, yellows, greens, and browns.

Earth tones make a great backdrop for nursery themes like woodland creatures, mountainscapes, and around the world.

5. Storage, Storage, Storage

Baby clothes, and diapers, and toys, oh my!

For such a little person, your new baby is sure to accumulate a lot of stuff. And with that comes the need for ample storage.

Instead of cluttering your beautifully designed nursery with oversized bins and drawers, consider versatile and functional storage options.

Movable hanging racks are not only convenient but a creative way to display all those precious clothes.

Open shelving is another space saver storage option that lets you display and store personal items.

6. Add a Personal Touch

Speaking of personal items, no nursery design would be complete without adding your own personal touches.

Homemade decor, hand-me-down blankets, and family photos are irreplaceable items that add meaning to your newborn’s room. Don’t be afraid to get creative and try some DIY craft projects.

Mobiles, picture frames, lamps, and chalkboard walls are all easy additions to any nursery.

Personalize your son or daughter’s room by painting their name on the wall in playful colours and fonts surrounded by adorable wall decal accents

7. Create a Focal Point

Any interior designer will tell you that a well-designed room has a focal point.

Most nursery designs have the crib as the main feature. After all, this is where your baby will spend most of its time during those early months.

But there are many other options to choose from like a large window, oversized chair, or signature piece of furniture.

Can’t choose just one colour for your nursery? An accent wall is another great focal point.

8. Light It Up

Having ample lighting when changing diapers and dressing your little one is key — but so is incorporating soft lighting that creates a warm, comforting feel.

When it comes time to decorate a nursery, there are endless lighting options at your disposal.

Adorable lamps that compliment your theme are perfect for rocking your little one to sleep or reading bedtime stories.

Overhead lights brighten up the entire nursery so your baby can safely play, learn, and explore. Opt for a ceiling fan and light combo that provides both adequate light and airflow.
